I used to smoke in my twenties, but I’ve long since gave that up. I was only a social smoker either way, if that counts for anything. I drink moderately socially. I’d like to think I’ve got the right amount of skill. A student once gave me a #1 teacher mug (I still have it and frequently use it). I don’t think they give those out to just anyone (I jest, of course). I’m friendly and engaging, but I don’t pander to students. I give them their deserved respect, as long as they give me mine.

I know what I’m doing and I know I can teach, as is evident by my past experience. A student one place is usually the same in any other place.

Why have you chosen to relocate to Green Ridge Island? Please explain below:
It was time for a change. I got tired of the monotony of my life in Long Beach, and I wanted something a bit less familiar. My older sister jokingly says it’s a midlife crisis. I’d like to think of it as a midlife adventure. Besides, I feel like I’ve done all I could in Long Beach, and I’d like to try my hand at a new challenge. Plus, a new environment could offer up a chance to excite the old Muse.

Green Ridge Island houses a psychiatric rehabilitation hospital, and as such, living and working amongst those with mental health issues would be typical practice. Are you comfortable with this?:
Of course. Eccentricities are what make the world go around.

Naturally.

Finally, please tell us a little about yourself. Where did you grow up, and what was it like? What were your prior relationships with significant others/family or friends like? What instances have lead to your current choice in career and/or relocation? What events in your life do you feel have shaped who you are today? Include any information you feel that is pertinent about yourself and your situations:
I grew up with my two parents, Harold and June Lester, and my older sister, Marjorie, in the Santa Ana area. My father and I had a tumultuous relationship. He never seemed to understand my interest in my interests in writing. He’d have much preferred if I had been something more reputable, say a doctor, or lawyer, or politician. He himself was police officer. My mother was much keener to my interests. She was a teacher and encouraged my creative endeavors. My older sister went on to become the lawyer of the family. She practices real estate law in the Anaheim area. We are three years apart. My father died at the age of fifty, of a heart attack. My mother is still alive and well, retired and living in a senior community. I still send her letters at least once a week.

I’ve never been married, though I came close when I was in my twenties. She was a writer as well, focusing on poetry. Ultimately we split up because we had differences in life goals. I’ve had several women in my past after her, but none of them ever got too serious. At my age, I’m happy with living the bachelor’s life. Well I ever want a wife or family? It’s possible. I’m not ruling it out, and there are those days were I’ve certainly felt lonely and been left longing for a companion. However, the opportunity hasn’t really presented itself as of yet. Maybe it will in this new place, though honestly I’m not really looking for it.

I’ve always wanted to write. Always. In college I realized this wasn’t quite so practical, so I switched my life plan to include teaching as well. That way, not only could I make time to write, but I could also teach others and help spread around the written word. Teaching is tough. Students today seem almost unwilling to want to learn and often blow off the idea of writing creatively. There are a few diamonds though, if you’ll excuse the terrible metaphor, and it’s those students that I enjoy teaching the most. Up until now my life seemed to be stagnating in Long Beach.

The idea of living on an island seems romantic and terrifying to me for some reason. This idea is what drove me to Green Ridge. Well, that and it’s interesting history. I understand that some residents here are of questionable mental stability and health, but that seems to be part of the appeal. As long as the island doesn’t turn into a situation like in Agatha Christies “And Then There Were None.” I think I’d be quite happy here.
