A Welcome Distraction Empty A Welcome Distraction

Post by Kitty Smith Thu Jul 07, 2011 6:04 pm

Kitty had had another one of those dreams last night. One of the ones where she was much smaller, and surrounded by people who spoke a strange language she didn't think she'd ever heard before. What really confused her though was that she understood every single word. There was something about the sea air here that did it, she thought, that was the only link she could find between her dreams and the island. That and the sand beneath her feet, but she didn't have much access to the beach here, not compared with some of the kids, Being on ward B wasn't anythign like as good was ward C, but she did at least get to share a dorm with Kenny now, and a bed too, far more often than they perhaps ought to.

Today was a school day though, not a day she could really do much of anything. At least classes were over though, though she had no idea where kenny was, and that left her bored. With nothing much to do, her mind was soon wandering back to the dream, on the smell of the air, tinged with salt from the ocean spray, and a strange, fishy smell. She'd seen the racks, drying in the sun, but they'd just been in the background of her dream, not a focal point. It was a familiar scent though, even if she couldn't place it. The more these dreams came, the more worried she was getting about them. What did they mean? What was that place, and that language? Did she honestly want to find out?

Desperate to take her mind off of things, she made her way to the rec room. There was always someone in here, usually someone bored, and a conversation might be just what she needed right now. With any luck, she could lose herself in a game of some kind, or anything else for that matter. She just wanted to stop thinking about the damn dream. Putting on a smile, she stepped into the room and made a beeline for the first person she thought might be entertaining. "Hi!" she said, smiling at them and givign a small wave. "What are you up to?" she continued, her smile staying firmly in place. It was genuine now though, for the moment anyway. "Do you mind if I join you?" she asked, the dream slipping from her mind already. She'd have to do this more often.

A Welcome Distraction Empty Re: A Welcome Distraction

Post by Andry Buernsey Mon Jul 11, 2011 2:54 am

Andry was fairly used to not sleeping now, but being used to it didn't make it any less unpleasant. He'd accepted the idea that he was never going to stop having nightmares, so he'd better just learn to avoid them. Therefore, he got his sleep now in class instead of at night, which left everyone just overjoyed with his academic performance. Not that he'd ever been a star pupil... Yawning widely, rubbing his dark-ringed eyes, he sat on a couch in the rec room, setting his elbow on the arm of the couch and his head on his hand. Staying up for all or a large percentage of the night had its advantages...okay, so it didn't. He had to listen to the guy in bed one talk in his sleep, which was really disturbing, actually, he had to find things to do all night, which was boring, and he had to keep himself awake, which was challenging and sometimes a losing battle. Sometimes, Andry just cried all night. He was recovering, though. Really.

Andry looked down at the little table beside the couch and saw a pack of cards. He picked it up and started to sort out the cards; solitaire was for lonely people, and he was definitely a lonely person right now. He wasn't even good at solitaire...he couldn't even beat himself at a game. That was pretty pathetic. He was just about to pick up the cards and try again when a dark-haired girl approached him, waving and asking what he was up to.

"Hi," he replied, smiling. "I was just...playing solitaire." That made him sound all sad...he wanted to smack himself and tell him to suck it up. He responded to her query about joining him with,"Sure...sit down. Solitaire is for lonely people, but I guess we could play a two-person game." The girl seemed pretty friendly, and her smile had already cheered him up a little. She wasn't his type, but he always liked being around people who were cheerful. Andry had been in the act of drowning for so long that it was a surprise to be pulled out of the water; it was almost unpleasant. It was almost easier to be miserable.

A Welcome Distraction Empty Re: A Welcome Distraction

"What's solitaire?" Kitty asked with a smile. The only card game she knew how to play was strip poker, and she wasn't very good at that. It was doubtful security would be too happy about her playing something like that, as fun as it might be, and while she did consider asking if there was a strip solitaire, she thought the better of it in the end. Everything was better with a strip version, that was true, but there was a time and a place for that, and in the rec room, under the watchful eye of several cameras, wasn't it. Breaking the rules would just see her punished after all, and she had no desire at all to end up in whatever box security would put her in for it.

"I don't know any card games that aren't all about stripping, can you teach me any?" she asked, grinning at him. She'd play the way she already knew if he wanted her to, whatever the consequences, she just hoped he'd teach her something new too. As much as she didn't want to get into trouble with security, saying no would be a hundred times worse. She'd learned that one the hard way, she never said no to anything these days. Still smiling, she dropped down onto the couch next to him, looking to the cards. This solitaire thing looked complicated, she just hoped whatever he was going to play with her was simpler.

"My name's Kitty, what's yours?" she asked, leaning over to give him a quick hug, still smiling brightly. There were so many nice people here at Green Ridge, just like there had been at Hadley, she was amazed by it all really. This was supposed to be a nuthouse, where everyone was crazy and maybe even dangerous, but everyone she met was always so nice and friendly! None of them deserved to be locked up in here, weren't places like this, with big fences and lots of guards, supposed to be for the really bad kids? She must belong in here if they said she did, but people like this boy or Kenny? They were normal! Why were they here?

A Welcome Distraction Empty Re: A Welcome Distraction

"It's...you try to get all the cards in the right order. It's pretty boring," Andry replied, wondering how a person got through life without knowing how to play solitaire. When she said that she didn't know any games that didn't involve stripping, he blinked, sure that he'd heard wrong. He didn't even want to guess why, but one thing was certain; he wasn't about to take his clothes off in the rec room, or anywhere else, for that matter. He decided that Go Fish was the first step for someone who didn't know anything about playing cards; his youngest sister loved to play Go Fish with her deck of princess-themed cards, and she was in kindergarten.

"I'm Andry," he said, slightly stunned by that fact that she'd hugged him but unable to resist smiling back, if tentatively; the grin was infectious. The hug had been a little too friendly, actually; Andry tried not lean away from her. He had a feeling that sudden, unwanted physical contact was kind of Kitty's thing. He hoped that she wasn't going to start taking off her clothes when he told her to go fish...

"Okay, so...I'm going to teach you how to play Go Fish, which doesn't require stripping," began Andry, shuffling the cards. "We each get seven cards, and we try to make them match. So if I have two fives, then they're a match. If you don't have any matches, you can ask me 'do you have a five?' and if I have one, then I have to give it to you so that you have a match. If I don't have one, I say, 'go fish', and you have to pick a card from the pile in the middle. The one with the most matches when all the cards are gone wins. Get it?" He dealt each of them seven cards, looking at her expectantly. He didn't think that she was stupid, but she was most certainly...uninformed. And it wasn't like he was phenomenal at explaining things; Andry thought that he could probably make walking in a straight line sound confusing.

A Welcome Distraction Empty Re: A Welcome Distraction

Nodding at the explanation, Kitty just kept smiling. "that doesn't sound that boring." she replied, looking at the cards, then back to the boy. There wasn't much that she would consider to be boring if she was totally honest, compared with spending hours, or even days, locked in a tiny, dark box, playing cards was amazing. She hadn't had to go through that in a long time though, and though she knew she had to go back to her husband one day, she just hoped he wouldn't put her back in there. he'd bought her though, so he had every right to, but she certainly didn't have to like it.

"It's nice to meet you Andry!" she replied, still smiling as she leaned over again, this time giving him a quick peck on the cheek. He was right about her and contact, though she didn't know it was unwanted. before hadley, that was rarely the case, barring a few group homes and the odd times when her then owners just hadn't wanted anything to do with her for whatever reason. She was still having trouble adjusting to what was appropriate, and besides, it was much more fun to do things her way. Settling back down into her seat, she just grinned at him, oblivious to any discomfort she may be causing.

"I know they don't all involve stripping, I just don't know any that don't." she replied with a giggle as he spoke again. As he explained further, she tried to get her giggles under control, nodding as he outlined how to play the game. Not one she'd ever heard of before, certainly not something she'd played, but she'd give it a try, it'd be fun! "I get it." she replied, giving a nod and looking down at the cards, waiting for him to deal. "I'll try and keep my clothes on." she added, looking up to him and grinning again. It was a joke, she wasn't that stupid, at least, not unless someone told her to be.

A Welcome Distraction Empty Re: A Welcome Distraction

Post by Andry Buernsey Sun Aug 07, 2011 6:48 pm

"That's good," he said, perfectly seriously. "It's nice to meet you, too." Andry wasn't really good at telling whether or not someone was joking; sarcasm was almost completely lost on him. It was one of the small things that he hadn't picked up on quite yet, one of the things that came naturally to everyone else that he hadn't figured out how to affect yet. He was also pretty sure that people didn't usually greet almost complete strangers by kissing them on the cheek, unless they were in France. That was definitely abnormal, and definitely unsettling. But Kitty wasn't at all threatening, so as perturbing as her acts of random affection were, they weren't panic-inducing. He wondered what kind of childhood experience lead you to want to express affection towards every stranger you met...hippie commune? Extremely friendly nudist colony? He wanted to ask. He also wanted to know if she ever considered that it was sort of dangerous to go around getting cozy with random people in a mental institution...what if he was some dangerous sex offender or something?

He handed her her seven cards, and then took seven of his own. He had a pair of sixes in his hand, so he set them down on the couch, looking over to see if she was going to do something similar. After a moment, Andry said,

"I'll go first, okay? Do you have any queens?" This was better than sitting by himself trying not to fall asleep, Andry supposed; it wasn't as if Go Fish was his favorite game ever, but it was fun enough. It was more fun with Amina, who refused to accept the concept of losing and often used her kindergarten wiles to cheat her way through the game. He was convinced that she was going to grow up to be some sort of evil genius. This particular game of Go Fish seemed largely unstable; one of the players had had to promise to stay clothed so that the game could commence. But this was St. Christina's, he supposed...abosolutely nothing was simple.

A Welcome Distraction Empty Re: A Welcome Distraction

If he'd asked, Kitty would have told Andry, well, anything he wanted to know. Questions like that were another thing the girl couldn't say no to after the years of abuse and conditioning she'd lived through. Chances were she'd have found dangerous sex offenders to be something familiar, she'd spent most of her life living with them after all, she might even have enjoyed theiur attentions to a point. Thankfully for her, she hadn't met any of them yet though, nor anyone else who'd take advantage of her state of mind, somewhat surprising in a place like this. Still, here she was, making friends and playing cards.

Picking up her cards, she fanned them out in her hand, keeping them facing away from her opponent of course, studying them. Slipping off her shoes, she curled her legs up underneath herself, and smiled over at him as he spoke. "Aww!" she said, taking two queens out of her hand and passing them to him. Strange as it seemed to her, she kept her clothes on after that, looking down at her cards for a moment. "It's my go now, right?" she asked, looking back to him. She'd just given up her only pair, but even if she lost she wouldn't mind. Playing a game with someone new was much more important than actually winning anything!

"Do you have any aces?" she asked, smiling at him yet again. Maybe playing card games that didn't involve stripping off wasn't so bad after all, even if she did still think it a little strange. It kept them out of trouble though, that had to be a good thing, if the staff here did have a tiny box to put her in she was determined to stay away from it for as long as she possibly could, unless that involved going against what she'd beent aught for so long. For now though, she was happy to just sit here and play cards like this, what possible harm could come out of an innocent game?
